Lab Technician

job purpose:  This lab technician will be responsible for monitoring qualitative/quantitative testing of process and product attributes to ensure food safety and quality. They will ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards and will ensure processes and works in progress meet specifications, and will interpret test results that have met specifications. The lab technician will also process documentation for non-conforming product and communicate information to plant management


  • Develop new products and processes, including consumer tests, laboratory work, process lab tests, document testing of materials and finished products, and microbiological analysis of raw materials and finished products
  • Responsible for checking butterfat, total solids, pH, acidity, flavor, odor, cryoscopy, viscosity, brix, HR-1, 2 &3, temperatures, antibiotics, coliform, DMC, DMSCC and SPC
  • Perform plant weight checks, temperature checks, ingredient usage and distribution, code date verification, environmental testing, pre-op swabbing, and conduct pathogen monitoring on raw and finished products while maintaining all records and results
  • Maintain all lab records, internal and external lab results, inspection reports, assist with state and federal lab inspections and main all records, etc.
  • Coordinate and maintain all third-party laboratory testing programs
  • Maintain proper calibration standards, dairy finished product evaluation and Appendix N antibiotic testing
  • Responsible for microbiological testing/documentation of finished and in-process products; interpret the results and retest/report abnormalities as needed, and generate standard report of results
  • Conduct routine inspection of processing areas including documentation to ensure that all documentation is present and correct and that all areas comply with GMPs and sanitation requirements
  • Other related duties as assigned by the QA Manager/Supervisor on duty

skills/qualifications required:

  • High school diploma required, Bachelor’s of Science degree preferred
  • 2+ years’ experience in microbiology/chemistry laboratory. Minimum 1 year of experience in a food production environment preferred
  • Accuracy and precision in testing procedures and mix formulation calculations, along with a keen sense of odors and flavors
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow technical instructions and effectively present information in 1:1 and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees in the organization
  • Possess a working knowledge of dairy industry and demonstrate comfort in a laboratory environment
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required, along with the ability to read, write, and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, and mathematical calculations
  • Demonstrate superb decision-making skills to determine best course of action in assessing test results
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and priorities while adhering to strict deadlines
  • Basic computer skills including knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs required. Knowledge of MS Office preferred
  • Knowledgeable with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), safety programs and procedures
  • Must be able to lift/move up to 25 lbs. frequently
  • Fluency in English required
  • Comfortability working around loud noise levels, industrial machinery, air-conditioned environments suitable for carrying out controlled tests
